A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL
By Dr. Sherry Gaber, D.C.
NMCA Vice President and Legislative Committee Chairman

“I am inspired to come back, the service was so well received. I experienced it as a great interface between the office and the legislators.”
“This was a non-stop experience, I saw people peek around the corner so they could be next in-line for chiropractic care.”
“This was truly a blast! I saw five people that never experienced chiropractic before.”
“I was reminded how good it felt to be a part of a larger chiropractic community. I often would feel isolated in my individual practice.”
“It felt like a sacred experience. I was able to share my passion, simply, easily, adjust and send them on their way healthier and happier.”

These were just some of the exciting statements that I heard from the chiropractors that volunteered at the Round House.

I agreed to take on the position to organize the chiropractors to volunteer their services at the Round House. I had never been in the Round House, even living in Santa Fe for five years. I had no idea the beauty and the cultural experience that it had to offer. In the center of the building, the Rotunda, I experienced the beautiful artwork from various cultures and artisans. In addition, there were activities and speakers that represented many community concerns, often with the television news cameras rolling. Every day there were different speakers in front of a microphone explaining significant state issues with information booths lining the large room representing the various organizations from the four corners of our state. Yes, this is our state capital known as The Round House.

There are many reasons why it is critically important for our profession to be at the Round House. First, we emphasize to the legislators the importance of chiropractic care. Second, we are there to represent chiropractic political change, which could be monumental this year or the next. Thus, we can support the legislators on important chiropractic issues and we are there to answer concerns. We have volunteered our services in the Round House for about thirteen years. People anticipate that we will be there each year.

We are reminding the community that there is lifetime, chiropractic wellness care available to any person who wants it. Let’s assume the leadership role
of the wellness revolution. We can ensure that chiropractic’s unique contribution to unleashing human potential is at the core of a wellness strategy. We help focus on creating a positive future and value in the health care community. Legislation can be created that provides the needs of chiropractors and of patients.

As Gandhi wrote, “we must become the change we want to see.”

If you are inspired to volunteer, here are some facts about the Round House program. The upcoming session for 2004 is considered a short session. The chiropractors volunteer in the foyer across from the House Gallery. Our days and time slots are presently being revamped. The legislators have appreciated our availability as long as they are in session, even till 12:30 a.m.!!!!!!!!! Details on days and hours will be discussed in future letters.
We look forward to having two doctors for each time slot because of the amount of patients and because it’s fun. This last session the doctors saw close to 400 people, which included the legislators, their staff, security official and the Round House staff. The area of service is shared with an emergency medical technician and medical doctors. The MD’s are in the area and are available to view our work and hear the chiropractic patients say thank you. It turned out to be an opportunity to work and educate each other. Interestingly, there were medical doctors that asked to be adjusted.

The EMT always announces “The Chiropractors are in, come see them for your health care.” What PR! Each and every office in the Round House is given an announcement that the chiropractors are back for the session. It’s a time of year that people from around the state are brought together and look forward to their chiropractic health care.

Doctors, please think about this unique opportunity for yourselves. Again, the next Round House session will be for four weeks starting in January, 2004. Many doctors sign up for multiple days and time slots. Please think about this for yourself as a gift to meet and support your community, to be a part of the legislative experience, and have fun with your colleagues. If you have any questions please feel free to call Dr. Sherry Gaber #505-982-7045.
