NATIONAL
BOARD OF CHIROPRACTIC EXAMINERS PRESENTS GREELEY, Colo.— The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners’ (NBCE) presented the summary report of the Computerization Committee at its annual meeting in Portland in May. NBCE board members Dr. Vernon Temple and Dr. Jerry Blanchard co-chaired the Computerization Committee, which included board member Dr. Frank Lizzio. Dr. Steven Bleser of the Ohio State Board, Dr. Beverly Foster of the Arkansas State Board and Dr. Sherry MacAllister of the Palmer Institute for Professional Development served as committee advisors. Through its research, the committee concluded that the convenience of the current campus-administered exams could not be matched by computer-based testing (CBT). In addition, CBT formats remain more costly than paper-and-pencil examinations, with projections ranging from 50-100% more per student per exam for computerization. The committee also concluded that the level of security that the NBCE maintains with its current program cannot be matched by existing third-party testing vendors. The NBCE will continue to acquire experience with various platforms to develop the infrastructure necessary for CBT delivery of exams in the future. The sample exams that are currently on the NBCE Web site as well as the acupuncture exam and the Chiropractic College Assessment Test (CCAT) will be transitioned to CBT vendors with the goal of keeping these exams affordable while expanding on their accessibility to students. Many students interested in pursuing a career in chiropractic have inquired about taking CCAT. In addition, the NBCE continues its work of calibrating items as part of the implementation of item response theory (IRT), which includes analyzing nearly 80,000 items in the current item pool. This is important in light of the fact that IRT will allow quicker delivery of scores to students, also a major goal in computerization. Currently, the NBCE Testing Department is ahead of schedule toward full implementation of IRT. Headquartered in Greeley, Colo., the NBCE is the international testing organization for the chiropractic profession. Established in 1963, the NBCE develops, administers and scores standardized written examinations for candidates seeking chiropractic licensure throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. The NBCE also produces and administers a practical skills examination for use in chiropractic licensure.
